How Hydrotect™ by Crossville® Works
Hydrotect employs a common, nontoxic compound, titanium dioxide that activates oxygen and water vapors when exposed to indoor and outdoor light.
Crossville’s proprietary process uses a hybrid photocatalyst coating containing nontoxic titanium dioxide. Applied in a secondary high temperature firing process, it stays on the surface and does not wash or wear off. When this revolutionary coating is exposed to light the titanium dioxide acts as a catalyst initiating photocatalysis, a reaction that can reduce the absorption of dirt and decompose microorganisms and pollutants.

- Hydrotect makes the surface “hydrophilic” which causes it to attract water so dirt, grime and grease can’t stick.
- Hydrotect’s anti-microbial* metals, together with activated oxygen, reduce odor-causing bacteria and mold.

Hydrotect™ by Crossville® can be applied to almost all (Click here for list of products)of our ceramic products, from floors to ceilings and interiors to exteriors. On the exterior of buildings, which often present cleaning challenges, most Hydrotect surfaces can be cleaned with just water. For medical applications and food processing, where hygiene and cleanliness take on critical importance, Hydrotect provides added protection. In bathrooms where bacteria, mold and odors can build up, Hydrotect is an ideal solution that reduces the need for harsh cleaning agents.
While relatively new in the U.S. market, Hydrotect developed by Toto has been used throughout the world for more than 15 years. Toto has conducted multiple studies over the last 15 years to test all claims, including its air-cleaning and self-cleaning qualities. Testing was conducted by independent laboratories, including Georgia Institute of Technology, Hannover University in Germany and laboratories certified by the Photocatalyst Industry Association in Japan.
