DCOF Ratings

Dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) ratings help designers, architects, and builders make more informed choices on tile flooring.
Measuring for Slip Prevention

Friction is the innate force that resists the sliding motion of one surface against another, such as the motion of a foot against a tile floor. Contaminants, such as liquids, oil, dirt, and debris, can alter that innate friction of a surface. So, commercial and residential builders need to choose appropriate flooring products that will reduce the risk of slips, trips, and falls. That's where a DCOF rating comes into play.

ANSI A326.3 Standard

Crossville believes that providing as much information as possible about recommended product applications benefits both our customers and design professionals.  We therefore share the newly adopted product use reference categories in ANSI A326.3 which have been implemented to assist consumers and design professionals in selecting the products best suited for a given application.  The ANSI A326.3 product use reference categories have been added to the online version of our application area chart and our Porcelain Tile Panel DCOF information.

The five product use reference categories designated by ANSI 326.3 are as follows:
    1.   Interior, Dry (ID)
    2.  Interior, Wet (IW)
    3.  Interior, Wet Plus (IW+)
    4.  Exterior, Wet (EW)
    5.  Oils/Greases (O/G)
According to the ANSI standard, hard surface flooring products shall be classified into one or more of the above categories. Additionally, the standard provides informative “possible areas of use” for each category.

Things to keep in mind

1. ANSI A326.3 uses slightly soapy water instead of clean water for testing.

2. The 0.42 DCOF rating is the benchmark for interior level flooring to be walked upon when wet.

3. ANSI A326.3 is included in the latest version of ANSI A137.1 Specifications for Ceramic Tile.

4. All Crossville flooring products have been tested using the A326.3 method.

5. Crossville produces mosaic tiles with the Cross-Sheen finish. The A326.3 Wet Dynamic COF is > 0.42. Their small sizes ensure frequent grout joints which provides traction and drainage. Crossville cannot control situations involving incorrect installation, improper slope to the drain for elimination of standing water, and poor surface cleaning. This information is provided so that customers may make a realistic and informed decision when comparing Crossville's mosaic to other tile products in wet area environments, such as residential/commercial bathrooms, showers, and interior pool decks.
